Marketplace fees vs Shopify fees: what sellers should compare

Marketplace fees and Shopify fees affect profit in different ways. Compare them before deciding where to sell.

Marketplace fees and Shopify fees are not the same type of cost structure.

Marketplaces often charge selling fees tied to each order, and may also include fulfillment, referral, payment, listing, storage, or advertising costs. Shopify usually gives the seller more control, but fixed plan costs, apps, payment fees, shipping tools, and paid traffic still matter.

The comparison should not stop at fee percentage. Sellers should compare order profit, traffic cost, fulfillment control, return rates, customer ownership, and monthly fixed costs.

Example: A marketplace order may have higher platform fees but lower traffic cost because buyers are already searching there. A Shopify order may have lower platform fees but higher ad spend because the store must acquire the customer directly.
