Conversion rate vs click-through rate

Conversion rate and click-through rate measure different parts of a funnel. Learn when each metric matters and how they work together.

Conversion rate and click-through rate both describe funnel performance, but they measure different moments.

Click-through rate, or CTR, measures how many people clicked after seeing an impression. It is often used for ads, emails, search results, and banners. CTR helps you understand whether the message or creative is earning attention.

Conversion rate measures how many visitors or sessions completed the desired action after arriving. It helps you understand whether the page, offer, checkout, or funnel is turning traffic into results.

A campaign can have a strong CTR but weak conversion rate. That often means the ad is attractive, but the landing page, offer, audience match, or checkout path needs work. The opposite can also happen: low CTR with strong conversion rate may mean the offer works for the right people, but the creative needs to reach more qualified clicks.

Marketers should compare both metrics together. CTR explains the click, while conversion rate explains the action after the click. After that, CAC, ROAS, and ROI help show whether those actions are valuable enough for the campaign to scale.
