How to calculate conversion rate

Learn the conversion rate formula, see a simple example, and understand how to use conversion rate in marketing and ecommerce.

Conversion rate is the percentage of visitors or sessions that complete a desired action. It is one of the most useful metrics for ecommerce stores, landing pages, lead generation pages, and paid campaigns.

The conversion rate formula is:

Conversion rate = conversions / visitors x 100

For example, if a landing page receives 5,000 visitors and gets 150 signups, the conversion rate is 3.00%. If an ecommerce product page receives 2,000 sessions and produces 40 purchases, the conversion rate is 2.00%.

The key is to keep the inputs consistent. Use conversions and visitors from the same page, same traffic source, and same time period. Mixing campaign windows can make the result misleading.

A higher conversion rate usually means the page or funnel is turning traffic into action more effectively. But it still needs context. A high conversion rate on very low traffic may not be enough volume, while a lower conversion rate can still be profitable if average order value and margin are strong.
